On Thursday, September 10, the Mayor of San Francisco announced a broad package of reforms tackling the rent emergency that is driving up the number of tenants being evicted across the city and the cost of living for many San Franciscans. The series of measures—including six proposed ordinances and more than $30 million in investments—will help protect renters from unfair evictions, prevent sudden rent spikes that can drive people out of their homes, and empower tenants with legal tools and information to exercise their rights if they are facing unlawful landlord behavior.

Supervisor Jackie Fielder will introduce legislation today to set a minimum amount of unpaid rent that can justify an eviction in San Francisco, a means to “provide renters some breathing room in the midst of unprecedented affordability and housing crises,” she said.

Starting November 4, 2025, tenants with housing-related issues may seek advice from an attorney or housing rights counselor on Tuesdays from 1:00 to 4:00 PM at the Bayview-Hunters Point YMCA, 1601 Lane St, San Francisco, CA 94124.
